SUMMARY:Working Class Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join Frank Gioia and Barry MacDonald for a night of working class stories- from the streets of 1950s Brooklyn\, to military service in Vietnam\, to the grueling work of resurfacing asphalt driveways. These gritty stories share the experience of hard work\, sacrifice\, and not so idyllic life. Both Frank and Barry are published authors and veterans of the AMSS stage and are sure to deliver an interesting performance. \nTeller bios: \nFrank Gioia is a writer\, actor and poet. His memoir\, The Mercury Man: Remembering Brooklyn\, is a collection of personal narratives about growing up on the streets of New York in the 1950s and his service in Vietnam in the 1960s. These are his recollections of coming of age in an earlier time and place\, in a Brooklyn that no longer exists. Gioia’s book is published by Bordighera Press and used as a source for the study of the Italian diaspora. His work has also been published in The Artful Mind\, the on-line journal\, Ovunque Siamo and What Do You Want to Know\, an Anthology of Veterans’ Voices. His book has been used in the writing project at Mule Creek State Prison and the MFA program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has read his work in the Berkshires\, the Twin Cities\, Sacramento and the Sierra Foothills. \nBarry MacDonald goes by the dharma name “Tekkan\,” which means “Iron Man” in 13th century Japanese. Tekkan indicates a “settled practitioner of great determination.” He was given this name when he took Buddhist vows. He lived in Japan for 9 years\, teaching English at the Berlitz Corporation in Kyoto. He practiced Zen at Hosshin-ji\, a Zen temple in Obama — a small town on the coast of the Sea of Japan. He is the president of the Crack Walnut Branch of Twin Cities Poets and Writers Group. He has written 77 books. He was the featured poet in the 2022 volume of Startled by Laughter — New Poetry in Traditional Forms; and was in the top ten of 2\,000 poets published by the first issue of Maplestaple in a literary contest in 2023. Sufian Zhemukhov joins with his guitar for a wonderful night of stories and music! \nTeller bios: \nChristopher Nelson- Drawing on my experiences as an educator\, I learned the power of a good story in the classroom. After retirement\, I found the American School of Storytelling\, attending open mic nights and classes. My narrative approach finds humor in small observations and meaning in ordinary lives. I try to balance softness and honesty that feels comforting and true. \nSufian Zhemukhov- an award-winning author and performer. Sufian’s solo shows have been featured off-Broadway and nationwide. NPR presented his show Flirting Like an American as “a show about romance\, culture\, and one immigrant’s story” and his show From Russia Without Love as “an escapist James Bond parody.” Sufian’s stories are based on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and political analyst\, which might be funnier than it sounds. He served as the 2023 Teller in Residence at the International Storytelling Center\, received the 2020 JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award from the National Storytelling Network\, and his research won the 2019 Best Book Award from the International Studies Association. \n

We’ll imagine ourselves into a larger pattern of kinship. \nCome armed with your curiosity and defenseless against wonder. This isn’t a show about seeking answers\, but about finding questions and celebrating mystery. \n\nArtist bios: \n \nNick Theisen is a poet who works with the languages of story and poetry in service to renewing our relationship with mystery\, reconnecting with our common humanity\, and remembering our relational self. He partners with communities in exploring and articulating their wider story of belonging and accompanying them in gaining a more rooted and expansive sense of vision through tending spaces that remind us of the participatory nature of being human.\nHis work is rooted in themes of wilderness\, interbeing and belonging\, mythic imagination\, and the ecological soul. This matinee performance features three storytellers\, three different braids\, geared toward an adult audience. \nTeller Bios: \n \nTravis Wolven: Travis accidentally became a storyteller through his use of stories while language teaching to humans across the multiverse of ages and cultures. With an M.A. in Communication & Storytelling\, he is excited to continue exploring stories as an educator and performer. In particular\, he enjoys dusting off myths and legends and shining light on not too distant lived experiences. \n \nEmily Katt: Emily has had a range of career “hats” she’s worn\, all of them involving communication: educator\, former magazine editor\, veterinary professional\, and a writer of fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry. In 2022\, she completed the Master of Arts degree in Communication and Storytelling Studies at East Tennessee State University. Four gifted tellers are collaborating on this show which explores the things people do to rejuvenate\, to heal\, to escape the banalities or difficulties of life. Each of these tellers has performed many times at the American School of Storytelling and other venues. Take our word for it\, they bring mighty chops to the stage. \n\nChristopher Nelson\nDrawing on his experiences as an educator\, Christopher learned the power of a good story in the classroom. After retirement\, he found The American School of Storytelling\, attending open mic nights and classes. He was asked to be the “Opener” for a Fringe Show featuring Sufian Zhemukhov (also featured in Good Medicine)\, and attends as many Moth Storyslams as he can. He has a narrative approach that finds humor in small observations and meaning in ordinary lives. \nJanna Knittel\nJanna’s parents worried their middle child would never learn to speak and thus cursed themselves. Janna has been telling stories ever since\, though only recently turning compulsion into discipline. Through poetry\, teaching\, and storytelling Janna enjoys inviting people into their weird\, sad\, and funny experiences. \nSufian Zhemukhov\nSufian is an award-winning author and performer. His solo shows have been featured at the 2025 National Storytelling Festival\, off-Broadway\, and nationwide. NPR described his show Flirting Like an American as “a show about romance\, culture\, and one immigrant’s story.” A Fulbright scholar and “Einstein visa” recipient\, Sufian draws on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and a college professor\, which might be funnier than it sounds. His storytelling has earned the 2020 JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award from the National Storytelling Network\, and his academic research received the 2019 Best Book Award from the International Studies Association. \nPeter Bretl\nPeter has performed at the Moth\, Uproar Comedy open mic at Bryant Lake Bowl\, and The American School of Storytelling (AMSS). In January 2026\, his solo show at AMSS\, entitled\, 3D: Drugs\, Debauchery and Deliverance\, sold out. A second night was added\, and\, as of this posting\, that show is nearly sold out as well. Peter’s storytelling\, like his life\, is all over the map. He can deliver “aw-shucks” sweetness. He can make you gasp with his tales of the underground cultures that he has immersed himself in. He can tell tales of his extensive travels on the down-low that range from hilarious to terrifying. Join Stories with Spirit as we explore just how close we are to the other side! Five incredible storytellers will each bring you a unique ghostly adventure. Cooper Braun and Rachel Ann Harding are overjoyed to welcome back two old friends. Loren Niemi an avowed master of the ghost story. And Laura Deal\, under whose soft exterior are chilling tales. We are so happy to welcome the one and only Motoko to our virtual stage for the first time. An amazing master of Japanese stories\, she will show us ghosts so many of us never knew existed.
