SUMMARY:Working Class Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join Frank Gioia and Barry MacDonald for a night of working class stories- from the streets of 1950s Brooklyn\, to military service in Vietnam\, to the grueling work of resurfacing asphalt driveways. These gritty stories share the experience of hard work\, sacrifice\, and not so idyllic life. Both Frank and Barry are published authors and veterans of the AMSS stage and are sure to deliver an interesting performance. \nTeller bios: \nFrank Gioia is a writer\, actor and poet. His memoir\, The Mercury Man: Remembering Brooklyn\, is a collection of personal narratives about growing up on the streets of New York in the 1950s and his service in Vietnam in the 1960s. These are his recollections of coming of age in an earlier time and place\, in a Brooklyn that no longer exists. Gioia’s book is published by Bordighera Press and used as a source for the study of the Italian diaspora. His work has also been published in The Artful Mind\, the on-line journal\, Ovunque Siamo and What Do You Want to Know\, an Anthology of Veterans’ Voices. His book has been used in the writing project at Mule Creek State Prison and the MFA program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He has read his work in the Berkshires\, the Twin Cities\, Sacramento and the Sierra Foothills. \nBarry MacDonald goes by the dharma name “Tekkan\,” which means “Iron Man” in 13th century Japanese. Tekkan indicates a “settled practitioner of great determination.” He was given this name when he took Buddhist vows. He lived in Japan for 9 years\, teaching English at the Berlitz Corporation in Kyoto. He practiced Zen at Hosshin-ji\, a Zen temple in Obama — a small town on the coast of the Sea of Japan. He is the president of the Crack Walnut Branch of Twin Cities Poets and Writers Group. He has written 77 books. He was the featured poet in the 2022 volume of Startled by Laughter — New Poetry in Traditional Forms; and was in the top ten of 2\,000 poets published by the first issue of Maplestaple in a literary contest in 2023. DESCRIPTION:A warm\, intimate evening of original songwriting under the summer sky. Join us for two distinct voices: Zola Rosenfeld’s tender\, literate indie-folk and Carl Franzen’s wide‑ranging\, story-driven songs. \nMusician Bios: \nZola Rosenfeld- Born in San Francisco (c. 2000) and made in Minneapolis (c. 2021).  Zola’s indie sound resonates somewhere in the realm of acoustic Elliott Smith and Aimee Mann. Skating the dichotomous line of opacity and vulnerability\, her lyrics explore identity\, memory\, and biting self-reflection. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter\, her artistic roots trace back to an early love of Shakespeare\, short-story writing\, and classical voice training. Devoted caretaker of a geriatric cat. \nCarl Franzen- I’ve met many songwriters who understand the way a song is supposed to be structured\, or how to appear on stage\, or have vocal cords that can go full throttle night after night. I don’t compare very well on those terms. The advantage I have is that I don’t put myself in a box. I write about the world as I see it\, with a changing menu that changes my perspective. I’ve written songs about God\, the Boundary Waters\, the day the bridge came down\, an all-night-café waitress\, a speed skater\, small towns. the ICE invasion\, and the wondering if the Declaration of Independence is a break-up letter or a love letter. DESCRIPTION:In “I Have My Ways: Teaching Stories”\, retired elementary school teacher Christopher Nelson shares some of the funny\, alarming\, and touching stories from his career as an educator. Sufian Zhemukhov joins with his guitar for a wonderful night of stories and music! \nTeller bios: \nChristopher Nelson- Drawing on my experiences as an educator\, I learned the power of a good story in the classroom. After retirement\, I found the American School of Storytelling\, attending open mic nights and classes. My narrative approach finds humor in small observations and meaning in ordinary lives. I try to balance softness and honesty that feels comforting and true. \nSufian Zhemukhov- an award-winning author and performer. Sufian’s solo shows have been featured off-Broadway and nationwide. NPR presented his show Flirting Like an American as “a show about romance\, culture\, and one immigrant’s story” and his show From Russia Without Love as “an escapist James Bond parody.” Sufian’s stories are based on his personal experience as a first-generation immigrant and political analyst\, which might be funnier than it sounds. He served as the 2023 Teller in Residence at the International Storytelling Center\, received the 2020 JJ Reneaux Emerging Artist Award from the National Storytelling Network\, and his research won the 2019 Best Book Award from the International Studies Association. \n

As a living symbol\, it represents the unknown and the unpredictable- the very medium of Life itself. \nDrawing on the languages of poetry\, music\, myth\, and story we’ll venture headlong into the underbrush of the timeless soul\, into the landscape of mystery and memory\, into the untamable grand story playing out all around us\, within us\, and as us. We’ll imagine ourselves into a larger pattern of kinship. \nCome armed with your curiosity and defenseless against wonder. This isn’t a show about seeking answers\, but about finding questions and celebrating mystery. \n\nArtist bios: \n \nNick Theisen is a poet who works with the languages of story and poetry in service to renewing our relationship with mystery\, reconnecting with our common humanity\, and remembering our relational self. He partners with communities in exploring and articulating their wider story of belonging and accompanying them in gaining a more rooted and expansive sense of vision through tending spaces that remind us of the participatory nature of being human.\nHis work is rooted in themes of wilderness\, interbeing and belonging\, mythic imagination\, and the ecological soul. Tracing the threads between self\, other\, and landscape\, he sees his work as a living engagement with the forest in both its literal and metaphorical senses- following the ancient and wild footprints of the mythopoetic tradition\, mapmaking with the compass of curiosity\, and pilgriming on a journey of tracking myth and mystery. \n  \n  \n \nAndrew Theisen is a multi-instrumentalist living in Minneapolis. He is a part of two groups (Sunny Duchess\, Witness Trips and the Compass Rose) along with filling in for other artists. SUMMARY:Ken Takata Ensemble "Music & As You Like It"
DESCRIPTION:In this show\, we’re featuring the many songs in one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies\, As You Like It. Most are new compositions\, a necessity given that almost all of the original stage music has lost\, but we will also feature a setting by Thomas Morley of “Under the Greenwood Tree” from 1600 that Shakespeare might have used. \nBesides illustrating the musical styles in Shakespeare’s day\, Morley’s song also gives us clues about how to handle one of the play’s central staging questions\, namely: \nQ: how do you portray the Forest of Arden\, the main setting for the play?\nDo you choose\n• a realistic forest\,\n• a symbolic “forest of the mind\,” or\n• a forest that’s a disguised version of Duke Senior’s court? \nThe answer\, somewhat surprisingly\, can shift depending on what music you use. We’ll show this by performing several different settings of the same texts so that audience can hear this in action. \nBesides songs from As You Like It\, we’ll also feature material from other plays. These influences shine through into the poetry and the result is a multidisciplinary show that is both experimental and accessible. \n  \nArtist Bios: \nHenry Kneiszel is a poet and comedian from Duluth MN who specializes in using absurd humor to explore modern problems. Their work has been featured in over twenty literary journals and has been performed at events such as the Art Shanty Projects\, the Barrel of Laughs Play Festival\, and the North Star Comedy Hour with Mary Mack. Their debut collection “It’s all too much I’m ready to become a Canada goose” is available in both written and audio formats. They grew up in the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota\, with regular visits to Chihuahua\, México\, visiting a houseful of tías. See More lived in Chicago for a number of years where they integrated Spoken Word Poetry\, Hip Hop\, education\, and community organizing in their formative years as a professional artist. She took her PhD in Post-Secondary Adult Education from Capella University and her MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College. DESCRIPTION:The wilderness has always held attention somewhere in the overlap of unrestricted fascination\, deep terror\, and enduring mystique. As a living symbol\, it represents the unknown and the unpredictable- the very medium of Life itself. \nDrawing on the languages of poetry\, music\, myth\, and story we’ll venture headlong into the underbrush of the timeless soul\, into the landscape of mystery and memory\, into the untamable grand story playing out all around us\, within us\, and as us. We’ll imagine ourselves into a larger pattern of kinship. \nCome armed with your curiosity and defenseless against wonder. This isn’t a show about seeking answers\, but about finding questions and celebrating mystery. \n\nArtist bios: \n \nNick Theisen is a poet who works with the languages of story and poetry in service to renewing our relationship with mystery\, reconnecting with our common humanity\, and remembering our relational self. He partners with communities in exploring and articulating their wider story of belonging and accompanying them in gaining a more rooted and expansive sense of vision through tending spaces that remind us of the participatory nature of being human.\nHis work is rooted in themes of wilderness\, interbeing and belonging\, mythic imagination\, and the ecological soul. Tracing the threads between self\, other\, and landscape\, he sees his work as a living engagement with the forest in both its literal and metaphorical senses- following the ancient and wild footprints of the mythopoetic tradition\, mapmaking with the compass of curiosity\, and pilgriming on a journey of tracking myth and mystery. \n  \n  \n \nAndrew Theisen is a multi-instrumentalist living in Minneapolis. He is a part of two groups (Sunny Duchess\, Witness Trips and the Compass Rose) along with filling in for other artists. Across delicate\, finely-wrought poems\, absence emerges not as emptiness but as a presence—an echo\, a wound\, a memory that shapes everything around it. \nArtist bios: \n \nGreg Watson is an award-winning author of twelve collections of poetry\, most recently ‘The Shape of Your Absence’ released in Spring 2026. He is also co-editor with Richard Broderick of The Road by Heart: Poems of Fatherhood\, published by Nodin Press. \nGreg is a native of Saint Paul\, MN and still resides there with his daughter. \n \nRenee Vaughan is a Minnesota-based artist who brings Sweden’s folk traditions to life through music\, dance\, painting\, and storytelling \n \nChristy Merry is a native Minnesotan\, an award-winning poet\, and a singer-songwriter. As an adult\, she lived\, wrote and performed in Chicago\, LA and NYC before returning to her home state\, where she now lives with her husband and two black cats.
