The Worlds We Escape To
The Worlds We Escape To is a poetry and storytelling performance exploring how video games, imagination, and the worlds we create can become sources of love, connection, survival, and sometimes self-destruction. Through personal stories, spoken-word poetry, humor, and raw vulnerability, Pickett traces a lifelong journey through addiction, homelessness, relationships, and the search for identity. Ultimately, the show asks audiences to reconsider the worlds they escape to—and how those worlds can help us find our way back to ourselves.
Artist Bio: Pickett is a storyteller and spoken-word poet originally from Chicago, Illinois, whose work explores survival, identity, heartbreak, humor, and the worlds we escape to. In October 2019, he became the Twin Cities Moth Grand Slam Champion and the National Storytelling Slam Champion in Jonesboro, Tennessee. A veteran of the spoken-word scene, he also performed at the National Poetry Slam in Florida in 2009. Blending raw honesty, vivid imagery, and irreverent humor, Pickett uses personal storytelling to explore how the worlds we inhabit can help us survive, connect, and rediscover ourselves. When he isn’t telling stories, writing poetry, or exploring virtual worlds, you can probably find him enjoying his favorite food: fried shrimp.
